Industry Training:
Frame & Truss (Timber Structure) Sector Qualifications

Training is a big part of the offering of the FTMA, which has been actively involved in the development and delivery of NZQA-approved qualifications since 2001.

The FTMA has worked closely with the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) in the development and review of the following qualifications.

  • New Zealand Certificate in Timber Structure Manufacture (Level 3) with strands in Wall Frame Manufacture, Roof Truss Manufacture, and Flooring Cassette Manufacture: This is a great place to start for anyone working in a fabrication plant on producing timber wall frames, timber roof trusses and timber flooring cassettes. You’ll acquire the practical and fundamental knowledge and skills required to manufacture prenailed timber structures in a manufacturing environment.
  • New Zealand Diploma in Timber Structure Detailing (Level 5): This qualification provides the timber structure manufacturing sector with graduates who have the skills and knowledge required to perform timber structure detailing.
Upon completion, you’ll be able to operate unsupervised to perform all aspects of timber structure detailing, maintain currency with technology and practice, and support the learning of others in timber structure detailing operations.
  • New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trades Supervision (Level 5) with strands in Construction Related Manufacturing and Construction Related Trades: This qualification provides the wider building and construction industry with graduates who have the knowledge, skills and aptitude required to undertake on-site supervision of construction-related teams and work programmes.
After completion of the Construction Related Manufacturing strand, you will also have the required knowledge and skills to supervise on-site operations of specific construction-related manufacturing teams and work programmes.

The FTMA has continual involvement with BCITO under the latter's business group structure, which is specifically dedicated to stakeholder engagement and focused on establishing relationships with key industry organisations such as FTMA.

BCITO must know about and respond to the skill and performance requirements of the industries they cover.  BCITO has existing and fully operational National Advisory Groups (NAGs) as one of their mechanisms for achieving this purpose.

Two members of the FTMA Executive team sit on the BCITO Frame & Truss National Advisory Group. They are a key liaison between the Association and BCITO, ensuring the Association has a voice.

The National Advisory Group is vital to BCITO, advising on strategic issues around sector requirements and considering workforce plan needs to help construction industry businesses and employers develop strategies that support both their mid-to-long-term business plans and the sustainable development of a better-skilled workforce.

Northern Timber Association Charitable Trust

The FTMA is in communication with the Northern Timber Association Charitable Trust, which offers funding support to advance the education of those who are employed in the New Zealand timber industry — specifically those in the upper regions of the North Island.

For more information on this go to: northerntimbertrust.org.nz/applications-for-funding-support.html

FTMA believes it is desirable for staff involved in the fabrication of timber wall frames and trusses to have a sound knowledge of the raw materials they use each day.

Workplace Literacy and Workforce Development Training

What is workplace literacy?
Workplace literacy is described as "the basic skills required for effective performance and communication in today's workplaces - including speaking and listening, reading, critical thinking, problem solving and numerical reasoning".

How we can help
Understanding literacy is about giving staff new strategies and skills to be able to perform their jobs better, lifting staff engagement, increasing buy-in to their roles and helping them overcome confidence barriers.
