About FTMA

The Frame and Truss Manufacturers' Association of New Zealand is a non-profit,
self-regulating and independently audited industry association.

Our Mission Statement is: To be the recognised independent voice for the Timber Frame and Truss Industry that promotes a skilled workforce working to best manufacturing practices.

Our Vision is: To have Timber Frames and Trusses as the most commonly accepted building solution in both residential and commercial building.

Our Values are:
ADVOCACY  For our members, equally and together as a group
COMMITMENT  To the industry, to our members, to issues that affect us
EDUCATION  To see that our people have access to the latest information and the best training
QUALITY  To ensure that our industry has the highest standards in manufacturing and Health & Safety practices
SUPPORT  To support our members in whatever way we can

FTMA is making New Zealand's frame and truss industry the very best it can be by:
  • ensuring a consistent high standard of manufacturing across the industry
  • ensuring the correct timber and building standards are adhered to
  • promoting best manufacturing practices among its members
  • facilitating quality audit standards via the following guidelines: Code of Practice compliance; manufacturer certification; industry training programmes; manufacturing practice guidelines; quality assurance programmes; regular quality reviews; and an independent audit system

FTMA has recently seen a greater intertwining of what our members do with broader building disciplines. One example is the rise in prefabricated products being imported from overseas, which are currently perceived as being treated in quite a different way to New Zealand-made products in terms of demonstrating how they meet the requirements of the NZ Building Code. This issue is being addressed across the entire building sector by various industry organisations.

FTMA maintains valuable communication channels by:
  • having ongoing dialogue with Government departments, territorial authorities, certifiers, specifiers and other professional building bodies
  • providing training opportunities
  • implementing discussion forums
  • creating networking opportunities
  • improving customer service in the industry

Annual General Meeting

The Frame and Truss Manufacturers' Association holds its Annual General Meeting in Auckland in mid-late September each year. This is the only opportunity, apart from our biennial conferences, for our large membership to catch up in one place and discuss relevant industry matters among themselves.

History

Formed in 1998 by a group of proactive frame and truss fabricators, the FTMA’s main focus was to raise standards in the industry and maintain a strong commitment to high quality prefabricated timber framing production practices. This remains our key focus.

During its earlier years the Association developed its own Code of Practice document. This was intended to provide a means of illustrating quality assurance to consumers and Building Consent Authorities (BCAs) by way of publishing the standards and procedures that members agree to adhere to. Following long-term and continued negotiations with MBIE over their regular Building Reforms and Amendment Bills to the Building Act and the Building Code, the Association made the decision to completely overhaul their COP document. The aim was to make it more meaningful and relevant to the industry, while future-proofing it to some degree against any implications arising from changes in direction by MBIE.

A few years back the FTMA became a member of the Building Industry Federation (BIF), who represent the supply side of the building industry, providing purposeful responses to the Government on policy issues that directly affect the construction sector. BIF is also strongly involved in advocacy with the Government, including the promotion of industry standards, development and engagement of key research issues, reviews of timber treatment and grading, and the resolution of issues arising from recent (and ongoing) amendments to the Building Act.

FTMA has accordingly benefited from a positive, meaningful and effective association with BIF, which has resulted in prompt and up-to-date communications with Government agencies and departments. The appointment of a Secretariat (currently Leanne McGregor) for general administrative functions has proved to be an effective means of maintaining accurate records of FTMA activities.
